Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Managed Kubernetes and Self-Hosted Kubernetes?

This is a common source of confusion. Key differences include:

Managed Kubernetes:

Service provider handles all the setup, maintenance and updates of the Kubernetes control plane. You can focus on deploying and managing your applications.

Self-hosted Kubernetes:

You are responsible for the setup, maintenance, updates, networking of both control plane and worker nodes. This gives you fine grained control, but requires more expertise and time. Many users underestimate the complexity of managing the control plane themselves that can lead to unexpected operational challenges and ASAP situations.

Can I migrate my existing Kubernetes workloads to a managed service?

Yes. Our team is ready to help you migrate existing workloads. The process typically looks like this:

  • Exporting your current Kubernetes configurations
  • We set up new cluster using our managed service procedures and best-practices
  • Transferring of your container images to new environment
  • Applying exported configurations to the new cluster
  • Testing and verifying migration

We do most of the heavy lifting so you can focus on your deployment cycle.

Can I use multiple cloud providers or on-prem infrastructure with your managed Kubernetes service?

While mane managed Kubernetes services are designed to work within a single cloud provider’s ecosystem, we have options and experience for multi-cloud and hybrid deployments:

We offer multi-cloud managed Kubernetes deployments.
We use Rancher (open-source) tool to provide a unified management layer for clusters in various locations
We have on-prem integration and can manage and connect Kubernetes services with any data center through VPN.

Keep in mind that multi-cloud and hybrid setups may require additional devops hours for setup and configuration.

Do I need to be a Kubernetes expert to use a managed Kubernetes service?

This is a common concern, especially for teams new to containerization:

While managed services reduce the need for low-level Kubernetes infrastructure expertise, basic knowledge of Kubernetes concepts and operations is still needed.

You don’t need to be an expert in cluster setup or maintenance, but you should understand concepts like pods, deployments, services, and ingress.

We are ready to consult and work seamlessly with your team to help bridge the gap.

Our managed services do significantly reduce the burden compared to self-hosted Kubernetes.

What level of control do I have over the Kubernetes cluster in a managed service?

While we manage the control plane, you typically have full control over:

  • Deploying and managing your applications
  • Configuring scaling and security policies
  • Scaling your worker nodes
  • Choosing Kubernetes versions (within the supported range)
  • Implementing custom monitoring and logging solutions

However, some low-level cluster management tasks and direct access to the control plane is usually restricted.
